CHAPTER SEVEN

Looking Out Instead of In

THE HALLWAY WAS DARK, but I could make out the silhouettes of Thomas and Ashley not too far ahead. I crept forward with Jimmy right on my heels. There were strange dark shadows along the walls and as my eyes adjusted, I noticed the large gold-trimmed mirror we had walked by during the ghost tour, at the end of the hallway. I squinted at it. Something was wrong. I took a few quick steps closer and gasped, scrambling back against Jimmy’s warm body.

He wrapped his hand around my arm and steadied me. “What’s wrong?” he whispered right next to my ear.

I pointed at the mirror. “What is behind Thomas and Ashley?”

Jimmy moved around me and squinted. Then his eyes widened. “Thomas,” he hissed, pulling me closer to his side.

Thomas stopped in his tracks and glanced over his shoulder. Jimmy pointed. Whirling back around, Thomas nearly jumped out of his skin. He picked up Ashley and pressed them both against the wall. His gaze flashed from the mirror and back to the space right behind them.

A gaping black eye socket on his half skeleton exposed face seemed to bore into my soul as the tall apparition stood motionless in the mirror. Terror thundered through every vein in my body. Clinging tighter to Jimmy’s arm, I nodded at Ashley to come back toward me. She vigorously shook her head. Her eyes moved back to the mirror, and without a word, she dropped to her knees and crawled furiously toward the mirror.

“What is she doing?” I muttered. My fingernails were digging into Jimmy’s arm.

He winced and looked down at me, before prying my hands from his arm. “We have to stop—”

Ashley’s ear-piercing scream nearly brought me to my knees. I stepped toward her, then stopped and looked at the ghostly man in the mirror. I was right behind him. Then my gaze caught another figure crouched in front of Ashley.

Dana.

I bolted forward, ignoring the chill as I rushed past the area the ghost was standing and joined Ashley at the foot of the mirror. Dana was staring back at us, tears streaming down her face. Her body shook with fear. I pressed my palm against the mirror, willing my hand to go through and pull her out, but the barrier held firm.

Thomas knelt between me and Ashley, pushing us both out of the way. “Dana?” he whispered. “No. No. This can’t be happening.” He glanced at Ashley and then at me. “What did you two do?”

“Nothing,” I stammered, crawling back a few feet. “This was not us.”

The temperature around me dropped, and Thomas’s eyes widened as his gaze rose. “Stay away from my sister!” he screamed, jumping to his feet. He whirled around but then sputtered and grabbed frantically at the air in front of his face as he rose a few inches off the ground.

Ashley screamed and leapt to her feet. “He’s choking him,” she cried, struggling to catch her breath. Her hands pressed against her chest, taking several steps backward down the other hallway.
